The D. E. Shaw group seeks a lead software engineer to join its Application Engineering (AppEng) team in the Systems group. This role involves partnering with developers, application engineers, and infrastructure specialists to design, build, and maintain resilient systems that improve product delivery and engineering effectiveness. The position combines deep technical work with meaningful collaboration to build solutions that support productivity, scale, and innovation across the firm.
Responsibilities:
Own various infrastructure offerings within the AppEng team, building and developing services to improve developer productivity firmwide.
Lead large-scale technical projects from inception to completion, acting as a senior technical architect for the wider team.
Collaborate closely with stakeholders across Systems and the broader organization to understand user needs, translate those needs into well-designed solutions, and drive both product strategy and technical execution.
Who We're Looking For:
A degree in computer science or another technical discipline, along with at least seven years of direct experience designing, building, and scaling large scale distributed systems.
Direct experience building solutions within the Kubernetes eco-system.
Demonstrated ability to build complex, user-facing and developer-focused products across a variety of languages and stacks (Python, Go, Rust, etc.).
Excellent interpersonal, communication, self-management, and organizational skills with a client-service mindset and the ability to build successful relationships within the department and across the firm.
Curiosity around technology, a willingness to take the initiative to spearhead improvements, a knack for solving open-ended problems, and the ability to see how small details impact the bigger picture.
Experience with Linux and Networking fundamentals, especially hands-on experience with on-premises infrastructure, is beneficial but not required.
The expected annual base salary for this position is $225,000 to $300,000.
